17 things we love about Syria
I haven’t had too much time online since traveling through Turkey and now Syria. I hope everyone has been following my updates on Twitter because that is where I am posting every time I get online. I figure 160 characters is better than nothing, right?
For now let me just say that Shawna and I are alive and well and loving Syria. Shawna made a list of things we love about Syria. We have only been here 24 hours so the list is sure to grow. Here are the top 17 from her list that are most appropriate for the blogosphere.
I promise to write a post myself as soon as I can.
1. Two words: Free kinafa.
2. For less than ten dollars you can eat: 2 bowls of soup, 2 salads, baba ghanoush, a plate of meat with bread, a giant plate of rice, two diet cokes and a large water. And it’s all delicious.
3. UNIBROWS.
4. In less than 24 hours, we have received 5 dinner invitations to peoples’ homes.
5. Everything, even buying lotion at a pharmacy, results in free drinks and hours of conversation.
6. Cheap. It’s so cheap.
7. We met an Iranian who said he will try to get Shawna a visa to Iran.
8. We met our first Kurdish friends (the only people in the world who adore George Bush).
9. We got to listen to Kurdish music, live, at our hotel. A guitar-like thing and singing.
10. I attempted to learn Kurdish dancing.
11. Shawna can understand Arabic much more here than in places like Egypt.
12. I am learning Arabic. Have mastered the basic greetings. Next lesson tonight!
13. We have gotten about 12 phone numbers and none of them are from sketchy men, but mostly from people who want to feed us homemade food and have us over for dinner if ever we return to Aleppo.
14. Despite being a “rogue state” and rivalling Iran in evilness according to the State Department, the people here are very nice and love Americans. Sometimes Shawna nervously apologizes for the U.S. government and the people here say, “no need, you’re great!”
15. We had the best banana split ever. We dont know if this is a Syrian thing or not but seriously, it was one for the record books.
16. The food is so delicious. Think really good Arab food, really good French food. Really good food. It’s a good thing we walk all the time or we’d have to get rolled to Lebanon.
17. We like showing people here that Americans are cool. Shawna sincerely enjoys the appreciative looks she gets when after talking Arabic with someone for a while they ask where we are from and look shocked and then pleased when she says America.
